Artist call-out for Speedy Crits
Speedy Crits is an online opportunity to ‘talk art’, respond to and receive valuable critical feedback on work at various stages of process.
The initiative was created by artist Helen Kilby Nelson and is a part of the Coventry Artspace Artist Development Programme.
We have two blocks of six sessions over 2021 and 2022. Each session includes: an industry mentor, one artist presenting work and a panel of no more than 7 peers. The sessions last one hour and take place on a Wednesday evening or Saturday lunch-time.
Speedy Crits offers artists the opportunity to:- develop their practice – create new connections with peers – gain valuable feedback on work in progress from an established industry mentor and small panel of peers- engage in valuable discussion with peers who they may not otherwise have the opportunity to meet. It removes the requirement for an artist to have a studio space suitable for visitors, or to travel with their artwork.
Industry mentors for 2021 include John Yeadon – experienced artist and founder of the Coventry-Dresden Arts Exchange; Anne Forgan artist and and Co-Artistic Director of Ludic Rooms; Jane Ball – Assistant Professor at Coventry University School of Art & Design; Ryan Hughes – Founder & Artistic Director of Coventry Biennial of Contemporary Art, Sarah Shalgosky – Curator at The Mead Gallery, and Evgenia Golubeva – award winning script writer and animator with clients that include, Disney and Nick Jr.
If you are an artist with a social practice and/or an interest in working in the public realm we have an opportunity on Wednesday 13th October for you to present your work in front of a panel of, no more than, 7 peers and industry mentor, Anne Forgan, artist and Co-Artistic Director of Ludic Rooms, Coventry.
If you are an artist/writer with an interest in script writing we have an opportunity on Saturday 27th November, 1.00pm to 2.00pm to present your work in front of a panel of, no more than, 7 peers and industry mentor Evgenia Golubeva, award winning script writer and animator.
The Speedy Crits format is straightforward:
The artists presenting work at the session will make available either an online folder of their work, a .pdf, or links to an online portfolio such as their website or Instagram, in advance of the session.
Access to the presenting artist’s work is made available to the peer panel at least a week before the session. This gives all panel members an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the artist’s work.
This gives everyone an opportunity to participate and allows sessions to be kept to one hour.
