The workshop will be led by artist Roo Dhissou and will explore themes of South Asian heritage through the Virk Collection held at The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum and a further personal archive of South Asian artefacts held by Hardish Virk at Coventry Artspace. Following the workshop participants will be provided with technical support and a small budget with which to present their ideas through a short pop-up exhibition in Arcadia gallery in Coventry City Centre. The exhibition will focus on a specific theme, which will be agreed between Roo and participants at the beginning of the workshop.
Roo Dhissou is a multidisciplinary artist/ facilitator/ researcher based in the UK. https://roodhissou.com/about
Roo explores the relationships and connections we have with one another as well as how we formulate a sense of self. Through her practice she investigates how multiplicity in culture is conducive to the concept of belonging and space. She is interested in facilitating discourse around race, gender and social class and the performability of these social structures. Using playful techniques, her current work reimagines cultural experience through gestalt expression, participatory performance, shared practices, gifting and attachments in found objects. Roo’s curatorial interests surround themselves around equity, facilitation and social practice.
Roo was the recipient of the prestigious Gertrude Aston Bowater Bequest as well as the Inaugural AIS Award 2020 and Tate Liverpool Award 2020. Dhissou is currently funded by M4C to undertake a fully funded PhD scholarship with AHRC. Roo has worked with Coventry Biennial, Niru Ratnam and more recently has had work acquired for New Art Gallery Walsall.
