Our January – May 2022 innovative programme of workshops for artists, led by experienced professionals in the field, respond directly to our research on artist development needs published in 2021.
All workshops are available on a pay what you can basis. Attendance fees are available to Artspace Exchange registered artists for Art of Curation Workshops and Leading Workshops course. Other workshops and events are provided free or on a Pay What You Can basis.

Curator Talk with Ian Sergeant

Curator Ian Sergeant will discuss aspects of his curatorial journey, which began as a curator of film festivals working in cinema and latterly as a freelance curator-researcher in visual art galleries. He will reflect on the artistic practices, cultural and socio-political movements or moments that have influenced his approach, which has remained central to his thinking regarding representation, inclusion, participation, and engagement. He has also been an active board member with local independent artist-led galleries, utilising his knowledge and experience to assist their development and create opportunities for aspiring artists and practitioners.
Art of Curation in partnership with Outside In and Compton Verney

Artists will take part in an intensive 4-day workshop at both Coventry Artspace and Compton Verney Art Gallery to explore its Folk Art Collection and its relation to Outsider Art. Those participating will consider contemporary themes and practices exploring domestic art, traditional approaches, identity and gender. Through conversation, tours, talks and practical activities the artists will work together to create a pop up exhibition relevant to a variety of audiences.
About the workshop leaders:
Artist and curator José Sunshine-Okoro leads through her practice as an artist and digital curator exploring opportunities to engage audiences with museums. Past projects have included Future Possibilities Lab, working with artists Barbara Walker, Divya Kasturi and Shaheen Ahmed and Birmingham University to explore geological connections with culture, difference and language.
Tess Radcliffe is a freelance artist (digital, photography, moving image), consultant, curator and educator. Previously Tess worked in the museum, art gallery, library and archive sector for over 15 years in various organisations across the West Midlands, where she was responsible for managing exhibition and curatorial programming, audience development, community engagement, interpretation, learning and volunteering. New projects include working with the travelling and fairground community to create new work and to highlight the artistic and cultural art of the fairground.

For creatives based in Coventry and Warwickshire who are interested in receiving professional feedback about their art practice and work processes. Also for people interested to listen in and learn more about a particular art practice.
Each Speedy Crit session takes 45 mins – 1 hour and consists of a 5 minute presentation from an artist. This is followed by a discussion between the artist and the industry mentor about their current work in progress. Participants are then invited to ask questions and/or join the discussion if they wish. It’s a great way to find out more about an artist’s work and gain an insight into career development in the art world.

Curator Talk with Tess Radcliffe

Artist and Curator Tess Radcliffe is giving a talk outlining her own career path within the arts sector, particularly with regards to issues around economic poverty, learning as a mature student, gender, and social class. She will also talk about her writing and academic research interests, with focus on interrogating interpretations of still-life painting and the genre’s relationship to revolutions, class and gender. The audience will get an insight into her own creative art practise which ties into themes within the Outside In Collections and the British Folk Art Collection at Compton Verney.

Coventry Artspace is delighted to be partnering with Outside In to deliver its Leading Workshops course, which will equip participants with the skills and confidence to design and deliver their own creative workshops.
The course will support each artist to develop their skills and experience to design and deliver creative arts workshops to a diverse range of participants in different settings. The course will be delivered by an experienced Step Up Tutor, who will provide artists with a structured practice-based programme, enabling you to plan and try out your role as arts facilitator.
The course will cover all aspects of leading an arts workshop. This will include how to support a diverse range of participants, how to approach and set up a fully accessible workshop space and ideas about how to creatively evaluate your workshop.

Art of Curation exploring the Virk Collection

Exhibition dates (including install) : 10 – 21 May 2022 (opening event and times to be agreed with participants who will be expected to support invigilation where they can)
The workshop will be led by artist Roo Dhissou and will explore themes of South Asian heritage through the Virk Collection held at The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum and a further personal archive of South Asian artefacts held by Hardish Virk at Coventry Artspace. Following the workshop participants will be provided with technical support and a small budget with which to present their ideas through a short pop-up exhibition in Arcadia gallery in Coventry City Centre. The exhibition will focus on a specific theme, which will be agreed between Roo and participants at the beginning of the workshop.
Roo Dhissou is a multidisciplinary artist/ facilitator/ researcher based in the UK. https://roodhissou.com/about
Roo explores the relationships and connections we have with one another as well as how we formulate a sense of self. Through her practice she investigates how multiplicity in culture is conducive to the concept of belonging and space. She is interested in facilitating discourse around race, gender and social class and the performability of these social structures. Using playful techniques, her current work reimagines cultural experience through gestalt expression, participatory performance, shared practices, gifting and attachments in found objects. Roo’s curatorial interests surround themselves around equity, facilitation and social practice.
Roo was the recipient of the prestigious Gertrude Aston Bowater Bequest as well as the Inaugural AIS Award 2020 and Tate Liverpool Award 2020. Dhissou is currently funded by M4C to undertake a fully funded PhD scholarship with AHRC. Roo has worked with Coventry Biennial, Niru Ratnam and more recently has had work acquired for New Art Gallery Walsall.

Artist Roo Dhissou talks about her own journey as an artist with a particular focus on her experiences of curation. Roo will then open up to artists who exhibited within the show Traversing as part of the Art Of Curation series, developed by Artspace Coventry and supported by Hardish Virk and the Virk Collection Archive.
